In the bustling city of Calgary, where the demands of work and family life often collide, one mother stands out for her resilient approach to balancing the roles of a cashier at a local superstore and a dedicated mom to her two-year-old daughter, Inayat Walia.
Mandeep Kaur is a housewife and works as a cashier at the superstore. She explains her journey of balancing her work life and parenting in an interview.
The transcript of the interview is below:
1. For how long you have been living in Calgary?
I moved to Canada in 2015, and I have been living in Calgary since then.
2. Where do you work?
I work as a cashier at a superstore near McKnight Station.
3. How many children do you have?
I have one daughter, and she is 2 years old. Her name is Inayat Walia.
4. How do you manage to take care of your daughter with your work?
It's very challenging for me sometimes, but I try to set a schedule and do everything according to that. Moreover, I've set up a routine that allows me to fulfill both responsibilities. During work hours, I focus on tasks, making sure to maximize productivity. When it comes to parenting, I've established specific times for quality interaction, such as helping dinner, and bedtime routines. Additionally, having open communication with my employer about my family commitments has helped create a supportive work environment. Flexibility is key, and I try to approach each day with a realistic outlook, recognizing that some days may require more focus on work, while others may lean more towards family. It's about finding that delicate balance that allows me to meet my professional goals while also being present for my daughter.
5. What is your favorite part of being a mother?
There are a lot of moments, but my favorite part is seeing my daughter learn and grow. From her first steps to her laughter echoing through the house, every moment fills my heart with happiness. Being a mother has opened my eyes to the beauty of unconditional love that comes with nurturing another life. It's a journey filled with challenges and triumphs, but every smile, hug, and "I love you, Mommy" makes it all worthwhile.
6. How do you handle rude behavior from your daughter?
Sometimes it's very annoying, but I always try to stay calm and patient. I always understand her needs, find positivity, and try to make her happy.
7. What are the fun activities you enjoy doing with your daughter?
We love doing art, playing with toys, going to the park, and watching cartoons together. Sometimes she does a lot of funny activities, which are very new for me.
8. What type of food are you giving to your daughter?
I always try to give nutritious foods like milk and fruits, and sometimes we experiment with new recipes together.
9. Do you have any tips for managing screen time for your kids?
We have set the limits; I always encourage her to engage in outdoor activities; and sometimes I use educational apps to make screen time more beneficial.
10. How do you handle emotional moments with your daughter?
Parents need to stay calm in emotional situations. This can help you create a peaceful environment. Mothers always play an important role in supporting and nurturing their children through various stages of development. We can start with physical care, emotional bonding, education, discipline, and emotional support.
11. What one piece of advice would you like to give all the mothers?
One tip I want to share with all moms is to prioritize taking care of yourself without feeling guilty. The responsibilities of parenthood can quickly overwhelm you, making it tempting to neglect your own needs. But you also profit from your capacity to care for your family when you take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally.
